Marrakech: 3-Day Merzouga Desert & Sahara Tour

Some places you visit. This one, you cross into slowly — over mountain passes, through river gorges, past kasbahs older than memory, until the road runs out and the dunes begin.

This is the 3-day Merzouga desert tour, Morocco's classic Sahara route, and quite possibly the most unforgettable three days of your entire trip.

Highlights

  • Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass
  • Visit Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed kasbah and former film location
  • Explore the Dades and Todra Gorges, with their towering canyon walls
  • Camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, and again at sunrise
  • Spend a night in a traditional desert camp under the stars

The 3-Day Program

Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Gorge

Early morning pickup from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping for photos of Berber villages and mountain scenery along the way.

Visit Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village famous for its mudbrick architecture and film history.

Continue toward the Dades Valley, arriving in the evening for an overnight stay at a local guesthouse.

Day 2: Dades Gorge → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga

After breakfast, explore the dramatic Dades Gorge, then continue to the towering Todra Gorge, with canyon walls rising up to 300 meters.

Pass through Berber villages, Tinjdad, and Erfoud before reaching Merzouga, at the edge of the Sahara.

In the late afternoon, mount a camel for a sunset trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes, arriving at a traditional Berber camp as the sky turns gold.

Spend the evening around a campfire, under a sky full of stars, in a desert camp for the night.

Day 3: Sunrise → Camel Trek Back → Return to Marrakech

Wake early to watch the desert sunrise over the dunes, one of the trip's most memorable moments.

Ride the camel back to Merzouga, then begin the return journey to Marrakech, retracing the route through the Atlas Mountains.

Arrival back in Marrakech in the evening, at your riad or hotel.

Total trip time: 3 days / 2 nights.

Good to Know Before You Book

  • Bring cash (euros or Moroccan dirhams) for lunches, drinks, and optional extras — ATMs are not available in the desert.
  • Pack layers — days are warm, but desert nights get genuinely cold, even in summer.
  • The camel trek is optional — if you'd prefer, 4x4 transport to the camp is usually available instead.
  • Comfortable shoes and sunscreen are essential for the dune walks and gorge stops.
  • This is a physically easy trip overall — mostly driving and short walks, suitable for most fitness levels.
